Start with good boxes
Use sturdy boxes of a few standard sizes so they stack evenly. Small boxes for books and heavy items, larger ones for bedding and soft things. Fill gaps with paper or towels so boxes don't crush when stacked.
Label everything clearly
Write the room and a short list of contents on two sides of each box, not just the lid. When boxes are stacked you'll only see the sides. A simple numbered list on your phone saves a lot of digging later.
Plan the layout before you load
Think about what you'll need to get to. Seasonal items, paperwork and anything you might want back soon should sit near the front. Leave a narrow walkway down the middle if the unit is deep enough.
Load in the right order
Heavy, rarely needed things go in first, at the back and on the floor. Build up with lighter boxes on top. Stand mattresses and sofa cushions on their sides and keep them off bare ground with pallets or boards.
Protect against damp and dust
Cover furniture with breathable dust sheets rather than plastic, which can trap moisture. Make sure anything going in is clean and fully dry.
